The online business world is filled with people, just like you, who want to make money. Of course, to make money, you must come up with a great marketing strategy for your business. The one thing many business owners have a problem with is deciding which strategy they should be using. If this seems to be the case, you need to learn how to divide your efforts in online marketing. One mistake many people make with their online marketing is dividing it into too many parts. They get so excited about the different ways they can advertise their products and services that they end up spreading themselves too thin. This is a bad thing. In order for a strategy to be effective, the time must be put into it. If you don’t put the time needed into it, the results are going to be less than you expected or wanted. One of the best ways to handle the various marketing techniques is to first choose one to concentrate on. For example, if you have chosen article marketing, commit yourself to writing at least five articles a day, five days a week. After you’ve become somewhat of an expert at this, you can continue with the strategy, but you can concentrate a large part of your time on another technique. As you become an expert in several techniques, they will become easier and can get done quicker. After you have five or six different marketing techniques down to a tee, you can then work on dividing your efforts between them. A typical day may be one hour spent on social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, two hours spent writing articles to be submitted to article directories, an hour spent on your blog, an hour in the forums and discussion groups, and another hour on product development. Typically, for a beginner, this is impossible. Your online marketing should consist of several different techniques, however, if you are new to the business, start out slowly and become an expert on one, before moving to another. The key to success is your ability to successfully work several techniques into your ongoing strategy and marketing your products and business. If you are a struggling network marketer, you may be trying to come up with a strategy that will have a major effect on your business. You may have even come across the idea of creating a network marketing newsletter for your business, but may have felt that the idea seemed to be a little too intimidating for you. However, what you would find is it really could help turn your business around. Distributing a newsletter that focuses around the theme of the business is going to be a great way to generate more leads for your business. Product information and reviews will help them to gain more business, as well. However, including some tips for marketers on securing the sale and generating more leads is going to help their income, as well as yours. In today's world, there are several difficult mediums to choose from for the advertising of your business. From television and billboards to radio and Internet, business owners can get the word out about what they can do for the consumer. If you are wondering whether or not the results of direct marketing would even be worth it, you are not the only business owner with this question. The fact is, if you do have a well thought out plan, it can work very well. First of all, you have to determine what your goal is with direct marketing. If you are aiming for a certain response, it helps to know whether you achieve your goals or not, in case you want to use this method again. Obviously, if you don't get the response you expected, you will either want to redo your campaign from the beginning or opt for a different strategy altogether. You will also want to determine how much time and money you can spend on this strategy. The fact is, this strategy can be more expensive than others. You will also find it can be very time consuming, as you will need to determine who is going to approve the copy and do the mailing itself. Once you decide upon all of the details, the project will go much smoother. The most important item, however, is the mailing list. Where are you getting your list from? Are you purchasing leads? Are they leads generated from your site? What you must realize is that the more you can target a certain market, the better your results will be. Direct marketing may not be for every business. If you are selling products with very low price points, you will find it may not earn the best return rate. However, for some businesses, it is the preferred method of getting results. Many people choose to do an Internet business based on affiliate products. Affiliate merchants will have you believe that promoting the replicated website is an easy way to make money.
The fact is you can make money selling affiliate products this way. However an easier way is to develop your own website or blog and promote it.
One of the most successful proven online marketing strategies is to build your own email opt in list. To do this you need a landing page and an autoresponder for future follow up.

Owning a business requires many skills, including those in advertising. What you will find, though, is that a very low number of business owners actually have experience in marketing and even fewer have advanced skills. What you don’t know about marketing can actually hurt your business. The following are three important factors you should know about the creation of a successful marketing strategy: *Do Not Rely on Just One Method of Advertising A successful marketing strategy relies on several different marketing techniques. Those business owners who choose just one method to use are not going to get their business in front of a high enough number of their target market to be successful. The fewer techniques used and the less number of people you will reach. *Rely on Both Paid and Free Advertising Opportunities A successful business also relies on both paid and free advertising opportunities. Those who choose to use free advertising only are missing out on a lot of great ways to get in front of their target market, such as pay per click advertising and banner advertising. On the other hand, using paid only techniques will result in the same problem. Making use of both paid and unpaid advertising will get your business noticed by the largest amount of people. *Know Your Products and Your Target Market The one thing you must realize is that you can not create a successful marketing strategy unless you know everything there is to know about your products and your target market. Each technique you use should highlight some of the various aspects of the product. Each technique you use should be directed at the people who should buy the product and you must know the best way to reach them. These are just a few of the factors you need to think about when developing a strategy for marketing your business and products. With all of the competition, take the time to educate yourself on some of the most effective techniques available. You might be surprised by all the options you have at your disposal to advertise business opportunities over the Internet. There are more ways than you may realize at first glance to advertise online. I will list some of the more popular methods below. Remember it is wise to spread your advertising interests around as much as possible and you should feel free to delegate some of the less favorable functions of advertising to someone else if it is going to cut into activities that might be more productive for you. Here are a few no-nonsense locations where you can advertise business opportunities on the World Wide Web. 1) Forum Signatures: This is quickly becoming a favored choice of those who have party plan businesses that are looking to drum up virtual bookings or live bookings within their communities and/or close to home. If you are an active and productive participant in most forums you are welcome to include a signature line that directly links to your business website. Check the rules before you do this though to make sure it is allowed and that you meet the requirements. 2) Banner Advertisement: Of course you will want to advertise your business opportunities on sites that will be receptive (and responsive) to this advertising method so it might be in your best interest to limit your budget to those sites that deal with men and/or women who currently do or want to work from home. 3) Article Marketing: This is sometimes referred to as bum marketing and is one of the most effective methods to advertise business opportunities online. You can use articles to direct traffic towards your landing page and gain all sorts of interest in your weekly newsletter. All you really need to do is create articles that are informative and entertaining to read. Labels: Advertising, Business Opportunities, Internet Based Business, Internet Marketing

Want to be a success with your business? If you do, then you must make sure you take the right path. The mistake that a lot of business owners make is creating their website and then developing a plan for their marketing. If you do this, you’ve set yourself up for failure. The following are a few things you need to know before you create your Internet marketing plan and your business website. First, you must do the market research on the products you have chosen to sell. Do people really want this product? Does the product you have chosen fill a need? Create a few surveys to post online and you may be surprised by what you can find out. Second, you have to evaluate your competitors. Who else is selling the products? What are they doing to market their products? What are their strengths? What areas has their Internet marketing plan left out? Next, you have to figure out what you can offer to the consumer that your competitors do not. It may be as simple as providing great customer service. If your competitors do not have a strong customer service, you may want to concentrate on this area. You will also need to develop a plan on how to handle your marketing when your competitors start making changes to their business, as a counter move against your business. After all, once your competitors see what you are doing, it’s almost guaranteed that they will do something. Have a plan already in place, even if you don’t need to use it. Last, you will want to develop a timeline for your business. How many sales do you expect the first week? First month? First year? If your sales do not meet your expectations, formulate a plan to ensure your success. Before you can create a great website or an Internet marketing plan, you must do the research and determine the route that you are going to take. Without knowing what your competitors are doing, you may simply feel like you are running around in the dark. A lot of people talk about how much they hate getting up in the morning and rushing off to their job. They may spend an hour on the freeway, only to find themselves stuck in traffic. By the time they get to their job, their boss is yelling and they have missed an important appointment. Sounds frustrating, huh? If you want to make a change in your life, you may want to take a look at a typical day in the life of an affiliate marketing associate. First of all, it is eight o’clock in the morning and where is the affiliate marketing associate? Just rolling over, deciding that it might be time to get up. After strolling over to the coffee pot, they pour their first cup of the day and go out on the deck to enjoy the scenery, while they wake up. By nine o’clock, they have jumped in the shower and are now awake enough to see to their work. Looking at their calendar, the associate realizes there is nothing pressing on the schedule for the day and turns on their computer. He or she then sits down to check and respond to any emails that have come in. They log in to the first affiliate program to see if there are any changes or any new product updates. Once done, they move on the next, until they are done with the programs. By this time, it is time for more coffee and a break. After coming back to work, they spend the rest of their day marketing the products they have chosen to sell. They visit a lot of social networking sites, forums, and discussion groups, as well as classified ad sites. Of course, they also get into a few conversations in these sites and can not help but smile. After all, they may be working, but they are having fun. Six hours later, after a quick review of their financial documents, the affiliate decides they are done for the day and they shuts down his or her computer. Which scenario sounds the best to you? If you are one of the people that has spent years working for someone else who may not appreciate all your efforts, you may want to consider becoming an affiliate marketing associate. Not only will you find it financially rewarding, you might just find yourself having some fun and enjoying your work. Labels: Affiliate Marketing, Financial Freedom, Internet Marketing

Part of growing your business is to recruit more members. This allows you to increase your income and enjoy your life to the fullest. To get new recruits, you must find out what they want out of the business. The following are just 5 benefits of joining network marketing businesses that you can discuss with them. * Freedom The main benefit of joining network marketing businesses is that it allows you more personal freedom. You get to decide what you want to do and just how far you take your business. If you want to take the day off to go to your child’s soccer game, there is no one there to stop you. In other words, you get to decide what is most important. * Spend More Time Doing What You Want Instead of spending an hour or more each day commuting to work, you get to spend more time doing what you want. You get to spend more time with your family and friends. Working for someone else does not allow you as much time to do the things you enjoy doing. When you work for someone else, you make a time commitment to them and it must be fulfilled or you do not get paid. * Be Your Own Boss One of the best things about joining network marketing businesses is that you get to be your own boss. You will make all of the choices in your business and no one will be looking over your shoulder to make sure it is done. While this can add another type of stress to your life, you will find it is much more enjoyable than to live by someone else’s rules. * Work Wherever You Want Want to take an unexpected week off from work to go fishing with your buddies or to a spa with your friends? Do it. You do not have to put in a vacation request form a month in advance. You can work whenever you want to and if you want two weeks off, it is your choice. * Flexibility of Hours You also will find you have no set hours when you work in this business. You can get up in the morning, work a few hours, take the rest of the day off, and put in a few more hours at night. You have a flexibility that no one else has and if you choose to work at home, you can do this or go to the local cyber café to get some work done. Either way, you get to decide what hours you choose to work. Labels: Home Based Business, Internet Business, Internet Marketing, Network Marketing, Work at home

I think it's a fair question to consider whether an average person can really start and run an Internet based business today. The answer is going to vary on the type of person.
It doesn't take any particular intelligence level to start and run an Internet based business. As long as you have average intelligence you can certainly do it.
The Internet doesn't particularly care where you live right now either. As long as you have Internet access, and a computer to work from, you can run a business on the Internet today.
The other thing the Internet doesn't particularly care about is your current income level. What you lack in money you can make up for by investing more time.
All of these things would suggest that an average person really can start and run their own Internet based business. However there is a little more to it than this!
For starters not all people particularly want to sit in front of a computer and work hard. This makes it difficult to operate an Internet business because you need to sit down and go work if you expect to succeed.
The exception to this would be if you outsource the day to day operations of your business. There certainly are people who have more money than time and would prefer to do this. And there are people who have more money than they have the desire to become an Internet marketer.
However these people are smart enough to understand the opportunities are there and will hire people to do the work for them. These are usually the people who succeed in a large scale way.
The other thing is if you're not going to outsource things you must have the desire to build a successful Internet based business. Only you can determine how successful you will become.
You are going to need a master Internet marketing skills and this will put a test to your desire level very quickly. There is nothing particularly glamorous about learning how to market a business online.
Educating yourself on Internet marketing skills is an absolute must if you expect to get traffic to your website and make money from it.
In summary the answer to this question is yes average people really can start and run their own Internet based business. However the high failure rate will suggest that some people are not willing to do the things necessary to become successful. That has nothing to do with ability or intelligence, but it has everything to do with desire. Labels: Internet Based Business, Internet Marketing, Make Money Online, Online Business

Effective management of an advertising program involves a partnership of members of the marketing department with all other companies involved. In some instances, this is limited to media providers such as television and radio stations. In others, the company first selects an advertising agency along with other groups to perform key functions associated with an advertising campaign.
To estimate, the average person is exposed to more than 600 advertisements per day. As every marketing manager knows, people are bombarded with messages through an expanding variety of media. Television and radio have long been the staples of advertising programs and they compete with newspaper and magazine ads, billboards, signs, direct-mail campaigns and other traditional channels.
Recently, the number of ways to contact customers has grown. Ads on the Internet, clothing lines with messages printed on them, telemarketing programs and even messages heard while a consumer is on hold on the telephone create numerous new opportunities to contact potential customers.
This situation represents a tremendous challenge for marketers. A company simple cannot afford to prepare ads for every possible medium. Choices must be made and messages must be of sufficient quality to give the company an advantage in a highly cultured world, a world in which people are becoming increasingly proficient at simply tuning ads out. To be effective, an ad first must be noticed. Next, it must be remembered. Then, the message of the advertisement should incite some kind of action such as a purchase, a shift in brand loyalty or at least a spot in the buyer’s long term memory.
Three ingredients must be combined to create effective advertisements:
1. Development of a logical advertisement management scheme for the company. 2. Careful selection of the media 3. Thoughtful design of the advertisement.
Selecting media and designing the actual advertisements go hand in hand, one cannot be performed without the other in mind. It is always good to remember that these two ingredients are connected to each other. Only then will the ad agency or creative department be able to create consistent, effective advertisements and promotional campaigns.
Advertising campaign management is an integral part because it lays the groundwork for the total advertising program. Advertising campaign management is the process of preparing and integrating a specific advertising program with the overall IMC message. One key element in this process is to develop the message theme. The message theme is an outline of key ideas that the advertising program is supposed to convey. The message theme should match the company’s overall marketing and IMC strategies.
As can be seen, the task of managing an advertising program involves careful thought, with a clear linkage between individual IMC objectives and the tactics used to reach those objectives. After all, advertising is just one element in the overall Integrated Marketing Communication program! Advertising a small business is a major challenge for the owner; due to limited funds and lack of clout in the media marketplace. The tasks of advertising management, ad design and media selection are often complicated because the company may not be able to afford an advertising agency. Even those with budgets large enough to afford an agency may not have as much money as the business would wish to spend on advertising. At the same time, advertising should not be abandoned. Careful and selective use of advertising funding is the most important issue.
Ad design is critical to getting noticed among national ads that are created with large budgets. While a national advertiser can spend a million dollars creating a 30 second spot, a local advertiser may be able to spend only $500. The challenge is to design an ad that speaks clearly and effectively. Under these circumstances, small businesses are tempted to put too much into the ad, trying to present all of the reasons consumers should purchase from them. This type of ad is too cluttered and overwhelms the viewer.
A small business manager should develop a creative brief to aid in the development of company advertisements. When business is new, the objective of advertising should be to create awareness. Creating persuasive or reminder ads should wait until there is a higher level of brand or company awareness.
Realizing its brand name was relatively unknown, Southland Cleaning Services of Springdale Arkansas, decided to tie the company’s brand name to other companies that were well known in the area. At a cost of only $400, a 45 second ad was creating featuring four local businesses that were Southland’s clients. Two included short testimonials from the client, while the other two featured Southland workers cleaning the facility. The ads ran on local television on rotating schedule. Soon, Southland was getting phone calls from businesses asking - - Are you the company that clean Sears? - - They were, because the featured Sears in the opening spot. While businesses could not always remember the Southland brand name, they did tie it to Sears and the message clearly came across to the right people, who concluded, - - If this company could keep Sears clean, they could keep my business clean - - .
Once the ad message is defined, various media can be selected while keeping the business’s budget in mind. These mediums can vary from Television, Radio, Billboards, Magazines to Newspapers and Internet. First four methods can be quite costly to the new businesses while the later two are good and affordable methods to start with.
In fact Internet ads may be more effective for small and start up businesses in different ways. A local company can often purchase ads on the community’s Chamber of Commerce site or city’s website. If ads can not be purchased, having the firm’s name on the site or linked to the site is important. For example, a new restaurant should make sure it is mentioned by the local visitor’s bureau and Chamber of Commerce Materials.
Providing a link to the restaurant’s website is even better because it allows locals as well as visitors or tourists to access the company directly. Another option is a reciprocal arrangement with another business. For example, a local pet store may offer to list local veterinarians on its website in exchange for the veterinarians listing the pet store on theirs.
The Internet can be a very powerful tool to provide information for prospective customers that can not be placed in an advertisement. On the website, a firm can place information about the business, its products and services, guarantees, current customers or clients and special offers as well as prices.
Television, radio, newspaper, magazine and billboard ads all can identify the firm’s website and encourage consumers and businesses to access it. If done properly, the Internet can be a beneficial form of advertising once consumers have been directed to it by some other form of advertising.
The company considering local advertising must consider the - - bang for the buck - - criterion. Dollard must be spent judiciously. Also, low quality ads may injure the reputation of the company. It is better to spend more money on developing a quality ad and less on the media reach of the ad than to create poor advertisement that is the burnt of local jokes. Small and start up companies must advertise, even though it is often a major challenge for the entrepreneur or business owner. A series of benefits may be realized when a firm effectively utilizes the Internet. For example, the Internet makes it easier for firms to communicate with loyal consumers. This makes it possible to solidify the relationships they have with the company.
To secure this advantage, the process begins by identifying the heavy product users. Remember, being a heavy user is not always synonymous with feeling strong brand loyalty. Some individuals or companies are heavy users because of price or convenience or for some other reason. When another firm emerges offering a better price or an improved delivery schedule, the heavy user often will switch while the brand loyal consumer will not.
Brand loyal consumers make purchases for reasons beyond the price, the convenience or the product itself. Often they experience a type of - - psychic - - or affective feeling towards the brand or company. Also, in nearly every instance of brand loyalty, consumers believe the brand is superior in quality. Inferior items are not likely to create brand loyalty. Lower quality products are more likely to capture repeat purchase behavior rather than loyalty.
The experience or feelings a consumer develops towards a brand are often the result of marketing communications between the firm and the consumer. Although advertising is a major component or communication channel used to develop brand loyalty, the Internet is becoming increasingly valuable.
The Internet provides three opportunities that are not possible with advertising. First, the Internet can be designed to make shopping and other contacts more pleasurable experiences. Buyers return to the websites because they enjoyed the experience previously. These feelings may be similar to what a customer encounters at Starbucks. Consumers are loyal to Starbucks because of the total experience and atmosphere of the establishment. Not only is the coffee good, but much more is involved in the feelings of loyalty towards the company. The second opportunity the Internet provides is the ability to establish one to one communication between the consumer and the firm. Database technology permits the company to retain a detailed history of groups of consumers as well as information about individual shoppers. Using these data, the company can develop a one on one relationship that ties the consumer to the firm. These communications (special offers, customized ads, etc) often move heavy users towards brand loyalty.
Thirds, the Internet offers the potentials to contact niche customers. Computer Economics research analyst Adam Harris notes that - - The Internet offers a unique opportunity for companies to target market - - . Potential niches include African Americans, gays, women, Latinos, persons of Asian descent and even Christian Web surfers.
In communicating with consumers, it is important to provide rewards for loyalty. These rewards are not promotions, but actual rewards. The gift or offer may be the same as for a promotion, but the dialogue with the consumer is different. For loyal consumers, these rewards are mentioned as a way to say - - thank you - - for that loyalty. On the other hand, consumer promotions are merely used to entice the price sensitive consumer or the light user to make a purchase. A reward helps the firm to say that the persons or business is important and the psychological impact of this type of message can be very strong. There is no doubt that powerful brands are vital to Internet success. The design of a website and the information it provides are key variables that affect perception of the brand. An IMC plan that emphasize brand quality should maintain the same theme on the website. Also, a website should reinforce the integrated communications theme that is presented in other media when this is accomplished, the Internet becomes a valuable tool in the development of the brand. Creating an effective brand presence online requires more than a website with an e-commerce capability. Cyber branding involves integrating online and offline branding tactics that reinforce each other and that speaks with one voice. The most common method of building an online brand presence is through offline technique called Brand Spiraling. Brand Spiraling is the practice of using traditional media to promote and attract consumers to an online website. From television, radio, newspapers, magazines and billboards to simple shopping bags, consumers are encouraged to visit the firm’s website. One goal of each advertising campaign should be to encourage traffic to the site and enhance brand recognition. The incentive nature of the Internet makes it possible for a firm to learn more about each customer. This information can then be used to target more specific messages. A company would for instance, place a magazine advertisement to encourage traffic to its website. Once the customer visits the website; he/she can be requested for some information in an effort to learn more about them and their particular needs. Adobe, a desktop publishing software company, uses billboard, Internet and print ads to drive traffic to its website. Adobe uses print ads in magazines such as Details, Spin, Wallpaper and Wired to target young 20 to 25 years old professionals who do not have strong back grounds in graphic arts but, for some reasons, have jumped into desktop publishing. Once at the site, a person can test and try different versions of Adobe’s products. Internet business firms use different techniques to advertise their websites. According to a study; the most common and effective method is displaying the website address on all printed and promotional materials. Next is placing ads promoting the Web address in various trade publications. Over 70% of the companies register keywords with search engines; because business buyers often look for a specific product. The odds of making a sale increase substantially when a firm’s website is cited after a keyword is typed into the search engine. The least used method is placing banners on other sites. Seldom do business customers go to a site when they are at another site. The primary effect of placing banners on other sites is to develop brand awareness and brand knowledge rather than to attract customers. Companies with strong offline brands benefit from what is called a Halo Effect. A well received brand leads more customers to try new products and services that are being offered by the company on the Internet. These same customers are also more willing to provide information that can be used for greater personalization of messages. This halo effect results from the credibility of the firm’s brand being transferred to an individual’s evaluation of the website. Barnes & Noble and Toys R Us were late entrants into e-commerce. Still, both companies built successful Internet business because of the strong brand names transferred to their website program. A company such as Amazon.com, which was an Internet start up, is likely to use traditional advertising media to help develop a brand name. Brand name power cannot be created solely through advertising on the Internet. To achieve a strong brand name, Amazon.com invested a half billion dollars in traditional media. The Internet must be one component of the total IMC program if a strong brand name is to emerge. It is just as important for a small business to reach a target set of customers with a distinct voice as it is for a large organization. Using an IMC plan to move forward makes this possible. A small business must identify a unique market niche, find customers and develop ways to attract those customers in order to survive. The IMC approach should be used with a major emphasis on the company’s name and brand. These ingredients must be understandable and help the customer believe that little purchase risk is involved in giving the company a try.
Likewise, one of the main aspects small businesses should develop is the venues by which consumers can contact the company. These include: - Traditional Methods
- Networking
- Lifestyle Marketing
- Websites
Traditional Methods of helping customers reach the company include the firm’s telephone service, mail and in-store visits. Having a phone number that spells a word such as 231-AUTO or 555-SHOP will help the customer remember the number. Some firms ask for sequences of numbers such as 885-1234 to assist in recall. Mail and e-mail to the business should be opened and answered quickly in order to maintain the perception of service quality.
Phone numbers, Internet addresses and mail addresses should be prominently featured in all marketing communications when a new business opens. Customers must know how to reach and find the company in order to make purchases. When a customer visits a retail store, it is vitally important to maintain the same prompt, courteous and sincere service.
Networking begins with something as simple as attending a Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club or some other local civic group meeting with a handful of business cards. It is important to develop contacts and relationships with other local business people, city officials and other key citizens in the community. One method of strengthening these bonds is to become involved in committees and projects.
Networking provides the opportunity to meet other business people, create leads and personally promote a new company. Networking also offers an avenue for feedback from customers as well as other business people. Relationships can be formed in many ways. A business owner’s doctor, lawyer, butcher, dry cleaner, family and friends should all be made aware of the new operation. They can pass along referrals and positive word-of-mouth. When making new contacts, the business owner should exhibit tact and diplomacy. Seeming pushy is a negative in these kinds of relationships.
Quality networks offer the possibilities of word of mouth endorsements and referrals. They can lead to not only more customers but also quality employees. Business-to-Business sales of anything from flowers to food to computer repair and consulting services can greatly increase company revenues.
Lifestyle Marketing is a guerilla marketing technique that is an excellent method of reaching customers and also represents a major opportunity to hear back from them. A booth at a special event such as local street fair offers the chance to visit firsthand with potential customers along with those who have done business with the company. Suggestions concerning product modifications as well as methods of delivering those items may come from direct users.
Businesses that use the Internet or are involved in e-commerce should select a Website address that is easy to remember and related to the business. For instance, The Pasta House Co. has the Website address http://www.pastahouse.com/ . The goal is to make it easy for customers to find and communicate with the company. A quality Website is easy to navigate and provides pertinent information. It should be an easy method for making purchases. An e-mail feedback option is vital. It is important to monitor e-mails and respond to them quickly.Labels: Business Opportunities, Customers, E-Commerce, Integrated Marketing Communication, Internet Marketing, Network Marketing, Small Business

Technology is a two edged sword in the area of marketing. On the one side, it creates marvelous new ways to precisely reach a set of consumers with a key message and to keep in continuous contact with those customers. On the other, it can be invasive and intrusive and presents ethical dilemmas for working on the Web.
There have been long and loud complaints about spamming. As with telemarketing calls, many consumers are frustrated with being forced to deal with so many unwanted messages. Is this an ethical issue or simply a practical matter? Either way, the marketing team must assess the viability of spamming programs.
At a more dramatic level, cookie technology allows a website to look into consumers’ computers to see which sites they have visited. Is this ethical? Should an Internet company be allowed to gather this information? Should the company be allowed to sell the information to other companies? Answers fall into two categories: (1) Legal and (2) Moral. While it may still be legal to collect and transfer consumers information in this manner, the ethical issue remains.
What has really surprised me while I was reading some days ago about the numerous ways these companies are using to bluff the consumers in order to make few bucks. One way for instance is that you start getting all these disturbing commercial emails which you do not know anything about to your inbox. Most of these emails will mention in the bottom something like - -If you do not wish to continue receiving further emails from us please click on the following link to unsubscribe - - . Then you proceed and click on the provided link to stop receiving these emails. However, when you go to check your inbox the following day; you see the number of junk or spam emails have been doubled or perhaps troubled.
This is one of the several non ethical techniques such companies use to trick Internet users or consumers. In reality when you click on those links to unsubscribe; you will actually confirm to this company that you email address is valid and you are checking it regularly. As a result, your email address will be sold to other companies because it is an active one which means more spam and unwanted emails. In this case, the best thing you can do is to ignore those types of emails and avoid clicking on any links they provide in the content.
Marketing professionals will continue to face the need for quality information. They must balance this need with the ethical ramifications of invading privacy rights and customer sensibilities. Failing to do so may have long term implications for both the company and those who use the Internet to shop for products and services. We all have heard about the term E-Commerce which precisely indicates any business transaction that takes place on the Internet. Some field experts would consider all business deals and activities that are being conducted using modern Telecommunication and Information Technology methods as E-commerce. World Wide Web, mobile phones, fax and TV are some of the methods people use to conduct business nowadays. However, this article is going to focus primarily on the components of E-commerce for an Internet business being the most popular platform for E-commerce activities. All E-Commerce sites have three components. The first is some type of catalog. A catalog can vary from just a few items to a complex presentation of thousands of products. The nature of the firm’s operation determines the type of catalog required. In every case, customers should be able to find the products of interest. Photos and product information are important in creating appealing online catalogs. Second, each site must have some type of shopping cart to assist consumers as they select products. Again, the shopping cart can range from just checking a circle for an item when only a few products are offered to more complicated shopping carts that keep records of multiple purchases. Third, each site must establish some way for customers to make payments for the things they purchase. For consumers, this normally is a credit card system. For business to business operations, payments are normally made through a voucher system. In other situations, a bill is generated or a computerized billing system is used so that the invoice goes directly to the buyer. In more trusting relationships, the invoice is added to the customer’s records without a physical bill ever being mailed. In spite of the fact that such systems are already in place, many consumers are still wary of purchasing products over the Internet. There are two reasons for this reluctance: (1) Security issues and (2) Purchase behavior habits. Security Issues:Consumer fears about security are based on worries about credit card number being stolen. Others are concerned about fraud where a retailer takes the money but does not ship the merchandise. Both can cause people to resist making Internet purchases.
To resolve these problems, a review of the past may be helpful. When telephone orders were first encouraged by email order firms, people were hesitant because of fears about giving out a phone or credit card number to a stranger they could not see. Now, nearly everyone is willing to provide the information while placing orders on the phone. Also, it was not that many years ago that credit card holders expressed anxiety about various store employees stealing those numbers. Originally, customers were instructed to - - take the carbon - - from a credit card purchase to make sure it was torn into shreds in order to prevent an employee from using the credit card number later.
The same pattern is likely to follow with internet shopping. As consumers become accustomed to using the Web, fears about giving out credit card information will be no greater than they are for telephone orders or credit card sales. IBM and Master Card have created a series of independent television commercials designed to calm and reassure people about the quality of their Internet security program; however, these efforts are set back each time a major virus is turned loose. Also, the Verified by Visa program is designed to create additional security for online credit card purchases.
Purchasing Habits: The second issue has strong ramifications regarding the ultimate success of E-commerce. Currently, many customers are most comfortable when they buy merchandise at retail stores. Some are also comfortable buying through catalogs. It will take time to change these habits, especially the preference for retail shopping.
At the retail store, consumers can view and touch the merchandise. They can inspect it for defects and compare brands. Clothes can be tried to make sure they fit. In addition, the customer can see how the clothing item look while being worn. Changing these habits requires the right kinds of incentives. Consumers and businesses must have valid reasons for switching to making purchases via E-commerce instead of traditional methods (at the retail store or following a call from a salesperson). To overcome this handicap, many E-commerce firms are trying to develop incentives that will attract customers to make purchases in this new format. The primary issue in the design of a business website is to make sure it functions properly. E-commerce companies spend an average of $100 to acquire each new customer and some companies spend up to $500.
It may appear that developing an effective website is cheap. In reality it is not. As a result, it is essential that the firm specify the key function to be served by the website before it is created. In addition, the site should then be designed to support the function, but from the user’s point of view. For example, if the function is to support e-commerce, then the site needs to be designed so it is easy for customers to navigate, select products and order them. If the key function is to support selling, then the person designing the website needs to talk with salespeople and determine their needs.
Companies spend almost $20 billion per year on Internet advertising of websites. Just as with the other components of advertising, consideration must be given to where these advertisements will be placed. One approach is to focus on targeted websites with similar customer profiles. For example, a website for John Deere may also advertise on other agriculture related websites.
Another approach is to advertise on a boarder array of sites to develop brand awareness. For instance, a company can advertise on a variety of websites in order to encourage different people to visit its website. Even if a person does not go to the site, the ad enhances brand awareness.
A website should match the constituency it will serve. Too often, a site is designed by a computer whiz who likes fancy graphics and images, the users of the site hate it because they can not find what they are looking for or the pages take too long to load. To summarize these kind of flaws, below are some clues to poor website design:
- Clueless banners - Slow loading front page - Forcing people to go through numerous screens - Too much verbal information - Too many technical terms - Sites that are hard to navigate
The proliferation of E-commerce websites is a challenging problem by itself. The marketing team should avoid as many pitfalls as possible to achieve the goal of building a stronger company through Internet activities. In contrast to the do not’s listed above, the following will highlight some tips and ideas for creating winning websites.
- The website should follow a strategic purpose such as to acquire new customers, serve existing customers, cross sell and so forth. - Make the website easy to access and quick to load. - Written content should be precise with short words, short sentences and short paragraphs. - Content is the key to success, not fancy graphics and design. - Graphics should support content, not detract from it. - Make some type of marketing offer to encourage a response. - Ask for site evaluation. - Provide easy to use navigation links on every page. - Use gimmicks such as moving icons or flashing banners to gain attention at the beginning but do not use them deeper in the website. - Change the website on a regular basis to keep individuals coming back. - Measure results continually, especially designs and offers. Todays technology has created a new form of marketing which is - - Viral Marketing - -. So what does it mean?
Viral Marketing is preparing an advertisement that is tied to an e-mail. It is also a form of advocacy or word of mouth endorsement marketing. In other words, viral marketing takes place as one customer passes along a message to other potential buyers. The name viral is derived from the image of a person being infected with the marketing message, then spreading it to friends like a virus. The major difference, however, is that the customer voluntarily sends the message to others.
Viral Marketing messages include ads for goods and services, hyperlinked promotions that take someone immediately to a website, online newsletters and various games. Statistics indicate that 81 percent of recipients who receive a viral marketing message pass it along to another person. Almost 50 percent pass it along to two or more people.
The marketing message can be more deliberate such as when an individual recommends something to a friend. It can also be transmitted passively, when the message is simply attached to an email. Viral Marketing allows a firm to gain rapid product awareness at a low cost.
The main advantage of implementing viral marketing technique is getting fast and effective results by using this technique widely on the Internet. This gives a better exposure to the website as well as its owner and make other people aware of its existence. It also helps in conveying the desired message to a larger audience therefore building a good reputation for both the company/website and the owner.
Another benefit is that the more popularity the website gain, the bigger number of webmasters it will attract who will be willing either in exchanging links or just placing inbound links. This will definitely increase the value of the website by having external links which will ultimately result in improving its page rank with search engines.
The number of visitors to the website will also rise on a regular basis as it gains popularity and search engine ranking. The website owner will really benefit from the high volume targeted traffic that is going to blow his or her website fame and shoot up his or her revenue. Therefore, I can not emphasize more on the importance of viral marketing in boosting the Internet Marketing industry these days.
Blue Marble, a viral marketing company, created a program for Scope mouth wash. Consumers were able to send a customized, animated e-mail - - kiss - - to their friends. The attached marketing message reinforced the brand message that Scope brings people - kissably close - . People who received the e-mail kiss could then forward the message to someone else. Scope’s tracking technology indicated most did forward the message.
The term viral may connote the negative image of a computer virus. Consequently, care should be given when offering to create such a program for a firm. Company leaders may want to find some other term to describe the technique to the general public so that no undue suspicion or fear arises. The Internet is an ideal medium for direct marketing. Consumers and businesses now order directly from numerous companies through the Internet. Internet patrons can also be sent e-mails promoting specific products. Businesses, however, have to be careful about sending unsolicited e-mails because many customers and businesses are frustrated by the practice of spamming or sending out mass unwanted e-mails.
Spamming on the Internet is equivalent to sending out junk mail to an untargeted audience. Instead, the firm should develop a more targeted Internet e-mail direct-marketing program. To do so, the first step is to get the customer’s permission. Obtaining this permission is easier when some type of reward is offered.
Most companies that market on the Internet adopt the above technique where in they use Web built-in forms that customers can check in order to receive company’s free newsletter then click the confirmation email which they get in their inbox to start receiving those newsletters and updates. Also, from the company’s perspective, the form is designed to obtain names for a database which may then be used in later direct-mail and e-mail marketing programs.
Some florists, for instance, have been successful using email to encourage direct sales. These companies obtain the client’s permission and then send reminders about anniversaries, birthdays and other important dates. Many customers find these personalized e-mails to be beneficial. It takes time to develop this type of program because the company needs a great deal of information from customers. When the relation is established, however, it can be a very strong direct-marketing technique.
The most recent trend in direct marketing via the Internet is interactive marketing. Interactive marketing is individualizing and personalizing everything from the Internet Web content to the product being promoted to e-mail messages. NCR produces a software called Relationship Optimizer and Prime Response that uses powerful data analysis techniques to personalize direct offers. The NCR software analyzes customer interactions such as click-stream data traffic, any type of customer interaction with the firm and combines it with demographic information from external or internal direct-marketing database. As the data are being processed, the software can launch complex interactive and personalized Web and e-mail campaigns.
Levi-Strauss uses a similar software called Blue Martini E-Merchandising, to customize both Levis.com and the Dockers.com Websites. The Home Shopping Network uses Edify’s Smart Options software to track user preferences and suggest product based on the customer’s past activities and current purchases. These Technologies blur the line between selling and marketing because the messages and product a customer sees are based on past purchasing activities. These programs are designed to increase the odds that the customer will see something he or she wants rather than being forced to wade through scores of products he or she has no interest in purchasing at a more standardized website.
As the technology improves and grows, other forms of direct-marketing programs through the Internet will emerge. Also, as more people access the Web while on the move - - through mobile phones and other carry-around devices - -, Web Marketers undoubtedly will develop methods to reach customers with on-demand goods and services. It is likely that direct-marketing has only scratched the surface of the potential that the Internet offers. In the previous part of this article, I have touched base on the first three components of Marketing on the Internet that were, Advertising, Sales Support and Customer Service. I have also explained each of these functions to the extent that helped you to understand how the Internet has transformed doing business and marketing to potential consumers. So let us continue as promised with the remaining two functions.
Another purpose for a web site as well is to create a positive Public Relations image. Some companies place information about not-for-profit and philanthropic causes they support on their websites. Individuals not only see what the company is doing but also may be able to volunteer for or donate money to a cause. At times these sites are separate from the company’s primary site. In others, a link within the site is developed.
Preparing a Public Relations site may be used by a firm in order to react to bad publicity. This gives the firm the opportunity to refute a charge or to explain the company’s side of the story.
As far as the E-commerce is concerned, many times a website is designed for E-commerce or selling goods on the Internet. E-commerce can take on many different forms. A retail store can vend items to consumers through the Internet when there is no handy outlet nearby or simply as a convenience for some shoppers.
E-commerce also can be a retail operation that sells entirely on the Internet without any physical store or even inventory. Services are offered, deals are mediated and products are shipped through this range of E-commerce operations. Instead of investigating all of the various forms of E-commerce, I will just provide a short synopsis of why and how setting up an E-commerce site benefits an organization.
Individual businesses have approached E-commerce in various ways. At one extreme it is the business that jumped into E-commerce immediately, because the organization’s leaders decided it was the trend of the future. These individuals concluded that the day would come when there would be no retail stores and everything would be purchased over the Internet or through an interactive television setup.
The other extreme includes those who decided that E-commerce is a fad that soon will pass away. These business leaders believe that consumers prefer dealing with people and therefore always will go to retail stores to make purchases. In reality, neither extreme seems very likely.
To the established retail operation, E-commerce offers customers an alternative mode for making purchases. Not every customer uses the Internet, but many do. As time passes, more people will become more comfortable with web site shopping. Without an E-commerce site, these customers are lost to other retail operations who have established online retail site.
Many times consumers make purchases at retail stores after first using the Internet to gather information. For example; a shopper may research stereos on the Internet and then go to the store with a list of - - finalists - -. Another person may get on the Internet and find a fishing rod with a special set of features. Using the Internet store locator, the individual identifies the closest store offering the product to make the actual purchase.
In that case, even though the customer did not make the purchase via E-commerce, he or she has used the Internet as part of the buying decision-making process. Consequently, the leaders of most established businesses know they must develop high quality E-commerce sites in order to remain competitive in the twenty-first century. Do you have what it takes to be an e-entrepreneur?Copyright © Stone Evans, The Home Biz Guy Author of "Dotcomology - The Science of Making Money Online"These days, it seems like everyone wants to work from home and make money on the Internet. But before you even turn on your computer, the first question you have to ask yourself is whether you are cut out for this kind of work. The fact is, building a home-based business is not for everyone. Some people like the commute. They really do enjoy having a boss who tells them what to do, and they like the routine of working nine-to-five for an ordinary salary that can barely pay the mortgage. Personally, I think they are nuts. More reasonably, there are people who are concerned about the risk of starting up their own business. They are not sure it is worth the investment of time and money, and they are scared of the responsibility that comes with running their own company. They wonder if there is another way to escape the rat race. I am sure there is. You could win the lottery or wait for your Aunt Sue to keel over and leave you her condo. Or maybe you could sit down with a pen and paper and draw the blueprint for - - The Next Big Thing - -. Anything can happen... Right? For me, what happened was creating a successful, self-running Internet marketing system. It did not happen without effort. It did not happen without at least some initial investment of both time and money and, of course, it does not happen now without me making sure that the taxes are filed and the paperwork is done. But it happened. I am my own boss. I work from home according to my own schedule and I get to pocket all the cash my business makes. If you are prepared to give an e-business the time, the work and the money it needs to get started and get growing, it can happen for you too. The greatest impact of the Internet is on sales, marketing and distribution systems for various businesses. These three activities typically account for 20% to 30% of the final cost of a good or service. What makes the potential of the Internet so exciting is that e-commerce companies have the potential to save 10% to 20% of these costs.
Thus, instead of paying for packing, shipping and transporting the product to a retail site, the firm has the option to send it directly to customers and can pocket the markup a retailer would receive. Also, the company can choose to mark down the price of an item, saving customers money and enticing more purchases. Shipping costs may be charged to customers for e-commerce purchases. As a result, the manufacturer does not need to absorb these costs which are normally part of the price charged to retailers.
Specifically, The primary functions a business website can normally provide on the Internet include: Advertising, Sales Support, Customer Service, Public Relations and E-commerce (retail store).
The marketing team should carefully consider each of these components when designing and managing an Internet program. The design of a website should be guided by the IMC (Integrated Marketing Communications) plan and the specific objectives the site seeks to accomplish within the overall IMC program.
So , to explain each of these functions clearly and ensure that you understand them well; I will split this article into two parts. In this part I will cover the first three functions that are: Advertisement, Sales Support and Customer Service while I will be discussing the Public Relations and E-commerce in a separate composition.
A flashy website designed to attract attention is created when goal is Advertising. Many firms use websites to promote individual products as well as the overall company. For instance, most movies now are advertised through traditional media (television, magazines) but also have websites for e-moviegoers to view.
Still, Advertising is rarely presented by itself without being incorporated with other marketing functions. Some websites are for Sales Support. In those instances, information about the products should be accessible through either a salesperson or a direct link from the webpage. These types of websites are used more routinely for the business-to-business customers rather than retail consumers.
Effective Sales Support sites must be useful for engineers and other members of the buying center who need additional product information. The actual sale is normally made via a salesperson. Then, the price and terms can be negotiated separately.
A Customer Service Internet site provides a different function. The goal of a Customer Service website is to support the customer after the sale. In this instance, documentation and operating information are provided. Customers who have questions can use the e-mail function to obtain information or scroll through the FAQs or (Frequently Asked Questions) to see the popular concerns people raise about various items or services.
Portions of these sites may be password protected in order to ensure that only customers who have purchased products can access certain information.
These Marketing functions clearly indicate the potential of the Internet to be a valuable component of the company’s IMC program. In my coming article, I’ll provide a complete description of the remaining two items Public Relations and E-commerce. Internet Marketing is not as simple and easy as some people would think, however, it is similar to the direct marketing job. It is even said that Internet Marketing is the extended development to the direct marketing and definitely a requirement nowadays in order to keep up with the global changes and circumstances including the technological revolution that humanity has gone through over years. At present, many people are choosing Internet Marketing to earn full time income. A lot of individuals who are working at home and managing their home based businesses whether partly or entirely dependant on Internet Marketing as an effective source to make money. Regardless it is individual or company, both need to fully understand the concept of Internet Marketing and keep in mind several factors that might really affect their business if not considered. As any other profession, Internet Marketers are facing some challenges and obstacles which may eventually lead to reduce the chances of their success or in other words slow down the phase of their work. The main challenges are the language and culture barriers that may cause some problems for Internet Marketers while interacting with their customers and other partner websites. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop kind of programs that would help in translating any language to different languages that would be understandable to the customer. Not to forget the cultural differences like principles and customs that play a role in a lot of peoples lives and put that in consideration too. May I also emphasize on the importance of a good management as well as a clear vision while marketing on the internet to cope up with the rapid changes in the market on both local and international levels. Also keep in mind that marketing is a difficult job to perform generally and it might not work if the people working in this field do not understand it very well. So talking about the Arab World, this might be one of the main challenges that is facing Internet Marketing companies here, considering that what happens in most of the Arabic companies is only an attempt to market electronically but really without any supporting specialty. Often, these companies fail to copy the means and methods shown in the different internet websites that in many cases do not succeed to communicate the message or to present the overall product to the end customer. Adding to that, according to some online marketing experts, these copied methods will not aim to more than either experimenting what might work and waiting for the reaction or applying the trick and seduce strategies similar to any other traditional marketing transaction. Privacy and Confidentiality also considered among the obstacles that face people working in this field. In other words, the number of customers who adopt the idea of shopping and dealing through the internet will definitely affect its popularity, especially that most of the electronic transactions require getting some information from customers such as name, nationality, address and payment method. For this reason, there is a need to incorporate special security softwares and plug-ins to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of the commercial transactions and encrypting the electronic payment system to avoid suspicious and fraudulent activities. Other concerns to the privacy factor include the necessity of introducing the laws and procedures to regulate the internet marketing operations and preserve copying and publishing rights on the web as well as develop the financial and commercial systems to facilitate online marketing activities. It is also very important to educate and make individuals and organizations aware about the internet and its effects on our modern lives especially in those countries who are still behind in using the internet. The good news though is in spite of the challenges facing Internet Marketing as discussed above, Information Technology experts are optimistic that Internet Marketing jobs are going to get better opportunities and seekers in the coming days with the wide spread of the internet and the huge circular of commercial and intellectual transactions already happening through it. International Trade Organization for instance, has published a report that illustrates that number of internet users in the world have increased to more than 100 million users in 2005 which 1/3 were from the United States itself. The report has also stated that the expected business transactions that are taking place through the internet will constitute about 70% of the total global trade by 2010. Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest passive ways for your home business website to make substantial income. This method of marketing was developed to drive traffic to one website through another, targeting specific types of potential customers that may be interested in the content of both sites. When searching for the appropriate affiliate marketing program for your business, you may start by simply looking on the Internet for established programs. Many larger companies and websites have already developed affiliate programs from which you may benefit, and have a set pay scale for each site visitor that arrives at their site through yours. These programs work like this: you sign up to be part of the established affiliate marketing program, and agree to post the affiliate website’s logo or banner ad on your site. When any visitor to your site clicks on these to visit the affiliate’s site, you are typically paid on a per-click or per sale basis. Another option, especially if you cater to a niche market, is contacting companies and websites directly to try to establish a proprietary affiliate program. This key to this is positioning your website and visitors to become a positive investment to the possible affiliate. If you have an established home business and website, you may be able to gather statistics regarding numbers of visitors and the typical customer profile. This information can be very influential when approaching another company about an affiliate marketing program or partnership between the two of you. This form of marketing is also beneficial for your website. Consider establishing your own affiliate marketing program in order to advertise your home business and drive traffic to your site for very little cost. Even those who do not click through to your site will still become familiar with your business name using these affiliate programs. When starting a new home business or website, it’s very important to establish low-cost marketing programs in order to increase traffic and profits. Affiliate marketing is perhaps one of the best ways to accomplish this task, and can also be beneficial to other related websites on the Internet. Another possibility is establishing an equal, non-paying relationship with a related website. By exchanging an agreement to post banner or other ads for visitors to click through to the other website, this is a great way for new home business owners to combine marketing efforts and double potential customers immediately.
